ImageL’économie et la Terre mènent des discours de sourds; c’est à nous de faire le pas vers un futur durable. C’est ce qu’affirme Donella Meadows dans son dernier article juste avant son inattendue et subite disparition. Ecrit en 2001, cet article reste toujours très actuel; c’est pour ça que je vous le confie comme pièce de réflexion et d’action.

Le premier commandement de l’économie est: croissance. Croissance pour toujours. Les entreprises doivent grandir. Les économies nationales doivent croître d’un certain pourcentage chaque année. Les gens doivent vouloir plus, faire plus, gagner plus, dépenser plus – toujours plus. 

Le premier commandement de la Terre est: assez ! Ca suffit, pas plus. Pas plus de terre. Pas plus d’eau. Pas plus de soleil. Tout ce que la Terre génère croît à sa juste mesure et pas au-delà. La planète ne croît pas. Ses créatures s’épanouissent, mûrissent, se diversifient, évoluent, créent une complexité, des beautés et des nouveautés inouïes, mais toujours dans le respect des limites de croissance. 

L’économie affirme: soyez compétitif ! Votre efficacité se révélera seulement en confrontant un adversaire de taille. La récompense d’une compétitivité efficace sera la croissance. Vous dévorerez vos adversaires un après l’autre et toujours plus. 

La Terre dit : soyez compétitif, oui, mais circonscrivez raisonnablement votre compétitivité ! N’anéantissez pas. Servez-vous de ce dont vous avez besoin. Laissez à la concurrence assez pour vivre. Eviter de vous concurrencer là où ce n’est pas nécessaire, coopérez à la place. ‘Nourrissez- vous, aidez-vous réciproquement, construisez des structures solides qui aident des structures plus faibles à voir la lumière. Diffusez vos atouts, partagez le territoire. Une sorte d’excellence ressort de la compétitivité ; d’autres choses se façonnent autour de la coopération : vous n’êtes pas en guerre, mais en communauté. 

L’économie dit : consommez vite ! Réparer ? Et pourquoi ? Plus vite une chose est usée, plus vite vous pourrez acheter du nouveau. Cela contribue à faire tourner le produit national brut !  Jetez quand vous en avez  marre. Jetez et oubliez. Prenez du matériel et de l’énergie pour en faire plus. Rasez les forêts tous les 30 ans. Sucez du pétrole et brûlez-le maintenant. Créez des postes de travail pour créer du pouvoir d’achat, pour pouvoir acheter encore plus de produits et ensuite  pouvoir les jeter. 

La Terre dit : pourquoi se presser ? Donnez du temps à la terre, aux forêts, aux barrières corallines, aux montagnes pour se reconstituer. Donnez des centaines et des milliers d’années. Quand une partie s’use, ne la jetez pas, transformez-la en ‘nourriture’ pour quelque chose d’autre. S’il faut des centaines d’années pour qu’une forêt se développe, des millions d’années pour extraire du pétrole, c’est peut-être le rythme auquel il faut les consommer.

 La règle de l’économie est : faites tout ce qui a un sens monétaire.

La Terre dit : l’argent ne mesure que le pouvoir relatif de certaines personnes sur d’autres personnes, et ce genre de pouvoir est ridicule,  comparé au pouvoir du climat, des océans, des innombrables cellules qui ont crée l’atmosphère, qui recyclent les déchets qui persistent pour 3 milliards d’années. Le fait que l’économie qui existe depuis une vingtaine d’année, ne donne aucune valeur à ces choses, signifie qui l’économie ne sait rien sur la valeur ou sur la durabilité. 

L’économie dit : souci, combat, insatisfaction. La condition permanente de l’humanité est la rareté. La seule façon d’éviter la rareté est d’accumuler et faire des provisions, mais cela implique malheureusement que d’autres auront moins. Tant pis s’il n’y a pas assez pour tout le monde. 

La Terre dit : Hourra ! Nous sommes nés dans un monde caractérisé par l’abondance et la beauté. Sentez-le, goûtez-le, appréciez-le. Si vous mettez fin à votre hargne et soulevez vos yeux assez longtemps pour contempler les merveilles du monde, pour jouer et danser avec les gloires autour de vous, vous découvrirez ce que vous réellement désirez. Ce n’est pas grande chose mais c’est assez pour le monde et pour aussi longtemps que vous pouvez l’imaginer. 

Nous ne choisissons pas quelles lois, celles de l’économie ou celles de la Terre, seront gagnantes. Nous pouvons choisir celles auxquelles nous décidons de nous soumettre. Nous pouvons choisir de rendrenos lois économiques consistantes avec les lois planétaires, ou alors découvrir ce qu’il se passe si nous ne le faisons pas. »
