One Swiss family out of 5 don’t own a car. This is what a Swiss study conducted by the Swiss Club without cars (CAS) has revealed. Around 30% have made a conscious choice to live without a car for ideological (ecological?) reasons. This choice is not only good for our environment but also for the purse: A Swiss family spends Sfr. 265.—in average per month for transportation against Sfr. 128.—for those who don’t own a car. In terms of public transportation, the Swiss are the world champions of train travels: in 2008 they have gobbled up 2103 km per person.
What better place than the train, to read, work, eat, listen to music, sleep, watch the beauty of the landscapes and meditate…and all this without polluting the air at a reasonable price.
Swiss railway is a state owned enterprise which has been constantly provided generous funding due to the strong conviction that railway companies were absolutely indispensable to the equilibrated economic development of the whole national economy including the mountainous regions. This view in the long term has paid off as the demand for rail transport is likely to rise with the hightened awareness of environmental action required to save the planet and the oil prices rising.

« Il n'y a pas seulement pour l'humanité la menace de disparaître sur une planète morte. Il faut aussi que chaque homme, pour vivre humainement, ait l'air nécessaire, une surface viable, une éducation, un certain sens de son utilité. Il lui faut au moins une miette de dignité et quelques simples bonheurs »
Marguerite Yourcenar
